BUYING SURPLUS PROPERTY FROM THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE

The U.S. Postal Service is yet another branch of the Federal Government that finds it necessary to sell or auction off surplus inventory and merchandise. There are only two categories of items that are put up for sale: “Surplus Jeeps” and “Undeliverable Packages and Parcels.”

CATEGORY 1 – MAIL DELIVERY JEEPS

Jeeps are perhaps the first thing that pops into ones mind when they think of postal surplus goods. That’s because the postal service has a very large inventory of two wheel drive vehicles. These are the Jeeps that are driven by our mailman every day when he or she delivers your mail. New Jeeps are constantly being purchased and older stock is rotated in order to keep the transportation fleet in good repair. Although Jeep auctions are not held that often, when they are it is quite possible to pick one up a great price! These vehicles can be repainted and make super recreational autos. The one thing to keep in mind though is that all steering controls and mechanisms are on the right hand side of the Jeep. These are completely legal automobiles and can readily be driven on the street, though it takes getting used to.

If you have an interest in obtaining one of these surplus Jeeps, write to the following address:

UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE
OFFICE OF FLEET MANAGEMENT
ROOM 7246
475 L’ENFANT PLAZA
WASHINGTON, DC 20260

Or it could be possible to find surplus information on their web site at http://www.usps.com .

When writing, you’ll need to ask them for the address of the Office of Fleet Management that takes care of surplus Jeep “auctions/sales” in your area. Contact that specific office and request to be notified of any up-coming auctions or sales.

You may first want to check with your local post office first. They may be aware of where these sales are held and will be able to save you a little time.

CATEGORY 2 – UNDELIVERABLE PACKAGES AND PARCELS

Every year there are literally hundreds of thousands of packages, parcels and letters that are, for some reason or another, not deliverable. The Postal Service must dispose of these items some how.

Rather than destroy everything, it is generally collected in five or six gathering stations to be opened, cataloged and sorted out. All useless “loose-in-the-mail” material is destroyed and anything of value is held for auction. You’ll find items ranging from jewelry, knife sets, kitchen items, books, watches, women’s and men’s clothing… in fact, you’ll find just about any and every item conceivable. If it’s small enough to be sent through the mail, it’s probably here as well.

Check out the U.S. Post Office web site regarding undeliverable, lost, damaged and unclaimed goods at http://www.usps.gov/consumer/auctions.htm .
